While the silhouette hasn’t changed, it gets several small changes that make a big difference. For starters, the headlamps are new, and while it retains the DRLs, the red detailing within the plastic covering has been given a miss. Then there’s a redesigned front grille which looks quite aggressive, and it gets chrome inserts. Both the bumpers have been redesigned and get contrasting silver skid plates that give the KUV a more rugged look. In addition to increasing overall length by 25mm, these also enhance the car’s approach and departure angle, which make it a bit more off-road ready. Further strengthening the KUV100’s appeal are sporty 15-inch alloys which fill the wheel wells a lot better now, and new outside mirrors which get integrated turn indiators.

The rear door handles are black now and don’t stand out like before. New clear-lens tail-lamps, new character lines and a new spoiler give the rear a much nicer look. Like the Anniversary Edition of the KUV100 that was launched earlier this year, this car also gets a dual paint option – the red or silver shade with a contrasting black roof – alongside the six other body colours. Overall, the KUV100 is more palatable to look at, and with this facelift, it leans more towards SUV than hatchback. But the oddball proportions remain and the confused mix of styling elements will not be to everyone’s tastes.

Mahindra has touched on many aspects that have made the KUV100 NXT look more stylish. To begin with, the interiors are now all black. The look and feel of these plastics have seen a big improvement. The materials certain now look a lot better than before. There is a texture that does look better. Moving on to the steering wheel, it is the same but now it is black. Small and easy to grip. The instrument cluster is the same too. Made up of twin dials and it has only two tripmeters on it. There isn’t anything different on it.The centre console is where the major change has been made. This now has a 7-inch touchscreen system. It is smooth and responsive. This thing gets driver information system like mileage, distance to empty and reverse parking sensors. New AC controls have been added too. This makes it look better and more aesthetic. The seat fabric has seen an upgrade too. the quality feels much better.

Moving on to the space, there is more than sufficient space for two in the front and three at the back. There is ample of knee room and head room for the rear passengers. The front seats can be used for 3 people, but the third passenger will find it tight. But the middle seat can be converted into an arm rest and what a lovely arm rest it is to have. In terms of storage, 1-litre bottles can fit easily in the front and rear rows, there is an under-tray storage in the co-driver’s seat. The rear seating central tunnel is flat. This even has storage underneath it. The boot isn’t very large, and even the access to it is poor.

Engine options are the same as before, so there’s the option of an 83hp, 1.2-litre petrol and a 78hp, 1.2-litre diesel engine, both mated to a five-speed manual transmission. We drove the diesel, which is smooth and with decent driveability. Like before, you can easily cruise around in a higher gear at lower revs and there’s adequate pep to keep up with traffic without the need to constantly downshift. There’s no spike in performance like in a typical turbo-diesel and the powerband is narrow, so by no means will it satisfy enthusiastic driving, even in Power mode. A special mention here goes to the superb five-speed gearbox that’s been developed by Porsche engineering; it is slick, precise and a joy to operate.

Mahindra claims to have improved the insulation and reduced vibrations. First impressions are positive and the sound from this engine isn’t intrusive, and only when revved hard does the diesel drone become audible. There’s no perceivable difference to the way this car drives with the suspension being tuned to be the softer side. So while it’s comfortable over bad roads, on open roads there’s a constant bobbing motion. The steering is still heavy and vague compared to cars like the Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Ignis, and the brakes feel a bit spongy, just like before.

Hence, the suspension will have to be a tad stiff. This is for better handling. There is some amount of body roll, but let us remember that this vehicle hasn’t been built for track, at the most to be driven on winding roads. This SUV has good enough stability and ideal for daily city use. It is meant to go smoothly on bad roads and have a pliant ride. Despite the stiff suspension it does a neat job. Most of the road jolts are ironed out, else you encounter broken roads. This is where it changes completely. The vehicle needs to have good enough ride and it does in most of the cases.

Now, the biggest asset of the Mahindra KUV100 NXT is its ground clearance. You don’t only have high clearance but you even sit high in a commanding position. This makes it a good view and comfortable to drive in the city. This is what other vehicles in this price miss out. The KUV has more than sufficient clearance to drive even on a bad road. The steering feedback is good enough but the vehicle doesn’t feel confident after 120km/hr.

The styling of this hatch will definitely not force you to leave your unfinished coffee and jump out of your seats but what makes the Celerio a bit special is the fact that this is a hatchback launched from the stable of the small car specialist Maruti Suzuki after a gap of 2 long years.

Features like audio and telephony controls mounted on the steering wheel are truly impressive. While LXI and VXI offer basic features, ZXI also gets a music system. Even the ORVMs can be electrically adjusted in the ZXI while the VXI gets manually adjusting mirrors.

It has a spacious cabin and offers great headroom too for taller passengers. The legroom too is impressive for front row and rear row passengers. Spacious cabin has to be the main attraction inside the Celerio’s cabin. All four seats come with an integrated headrest hinting cost cutting measures but then are not evident. Seats are decently cushioned and are ideal for in city traffic.

It has a generous glove box, twin cup holders on the central console as well as provision on door pockets for mundane stowage. Even the boot is a generous 235L which eventually translates into easy luggage storage.The Celerio does not disappoint when it comes to interiors. Mahindra Scorpio Look

Like we already mentioned above the test mule of the facelifted SUV was spotted a couple of times and from the spy shots of the test mule, it is quite clear that the facelifted SUV will get all the changes mostly towards its front and rear profile.

The front profile of the SUV will feature a restyled bumper which might get some bigger air inlets to make it look premium and slightly more aggressive. Apart from the new bumper expect the facelifted SUV also to get a slightly redesigned grille as well. Many reports are saying that Mahindra might redo the headlamps, but we firmly believe that the daytime running lamps styling won’t change much. Apart from these changes to the front profile, there won’t be any changes made to the side profile of the SUV. However, we do expect it to get a new set of alloy wheels to enhance its exterior styling. Just like the front profile the rear profile of the SUV will also get some styling updates as well which might come in the form of slightly redesigned taillamps and rear bumper.

Mahindra Scorpio Comfort

The updated Mahindra Scorpio continues with the dual-tone black and beige treatment for the dashboard. There are no vast improvements and you get the same 6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a new reverse parking camera (with dynamic assist). You also get Bluetooth, AUX, USB connectivity and Navigation but Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are still missing. Mahindra hasn’t done any changes to the door pockets as well and one will find it almost impossible to access the door pockets or even adjust the position of the seat when the doors are closed. The new S11 variant gets a sun-glass holder and auto-window roll up (window rolls up automatically when you lock the car). Some other features include automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, TPMS, follow me home headlamps, projector headlamps with static bending function and climate control. The AC chills the cabin nicely while the seats are comfortable, however, the third row jump seats are best suited for kids.

Mahindra Scorpio Gearbox

Biggest change in the new 2017 Scorpio is the 140bhp setup that has been brought in from the XUV. The 2.2-litre M-Hawk turbocharged diesel engine now develops 140bhp of power and 320Nm of torque and comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox that drives the rear wheels. Mahindra has been able to tune this AVL block quite well and the extra power is felt right away. There is more pull available from as low as 1400rpm and the torque builds up till 3500rpm. The power starts tapering off after 4200 but with the six-speed gearbox, the rev range is more than enough for everything.

The gearbox also feels much more positive in its engagement and with the light clutch, shifting is not much of an issue. Gear throws out the old-school SUV lineage and you have to get used to the shift pattern to distinguish between the reverse and the first gears without needing a second attempt. Quick off the blocks, the Scorpio cruises easily in the low hundreds with the engine revving around 2000rpm in sixth gear, giving it a nice blend of economy. And the best part is that, with so much torque available, you barely need to downshift. It climbed uphill in sixth from 60kmph without breaking a sweat with only me inside the car. Also, whatever Mahindra has done with the suspension tweaks seems to have worked. It feels planted most of the time but still hops and skips over asymmetrical bumps in a straight line and the underlying jiggles of the ladder-frame are hard to miss. On the other hand, if you drive through switchback corners at humane speeds, it feels quite composed. As an engineer, this is quite a puzzle but as a driver, it gives me more confidence than before.

Mahindra Scorpio Rideing

Ride quality has also improved and it is plush now. The sharp edged bumps are now registered as mere muffled thuds and along with the improved NVH, the Scorpio is a much better place to be in than before. The steering is lighter than before and apart from a little vagueness in the centre, is quite precise. Of course, the feedback is minimal, but it pans out well for the overall package of city and highway driving. The brakes also feel much better than before and have come a long way from their spongy wooden self of the first-gen Scorpio.

Mahindra Scorpio Safety

Global NCAP has crash-tested the Mahindra Scorpio (with no airbags) and the SUV scored a poor zero star rating in adult occupancy test and a mere two-star rating in the child occupancy test. However, Mahindra is offering dual airbags and ABS starting from the S5 trim. Considering that the S11 trim costs over 15 lakhs, it would have been great if Mahindra had offered side airbags, at least as an option. Mahindra’s after-sales service is good and the automaker has a widespread network across India.

Mahindra has brought in these minor improvements to the Scorpio to keep the product fresh and most of these changes are more than welcome, especially the better performance. However, the Scorpio has certain downsides like average ergonomics and the not-so-comfortable ride. Keeping that aside, it has proven its mettle over the years that it is a tough SUV offering good performance on and off the road, the Scorpio continues to remain a good choice for people who want a full-sized SUV in this price bracket because options are limited to only this and the Tata Safari Storme while the other options are compact SUVs. As for Mahindra, they might have to put in some more efforts in the near future to launch a more modern and posh version of the SUV, especially when new rivals will start popping up in the market.

Seeking inspiration from the flagship offering, Santa Fe, the Hyundai Creta looks fresh and unique. It doesn’t have bulging muscles or pseudo cladding instead has a much matured approach with a modern meeting urban design theme. Since it is based on the Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, also responsible for the gorgeous styling of the Elite i20, the Creta’s exterior design scores the most and is also one of the strongest decision making factors.What are the unique bits in the design? Giving it a uniform brand identity is the new radiator grille sporting solid triple chrome slats, exactly like that on the Santa Fe. One good thing is that they have gone easy with chrome making sure it looks premium and at the same time fulfils the popular want of Indian consumers. Then come the wraparound headlamps with projectors lights, LED position strips and cornering lamps, all of which are a first in the segment. Ditching the conventional shape and position, it gets vertically slotted fog lamps. There is a strong profile which runs across the width of the front bumper with silver finished skid plates underneath.

To make it less resistant against air flow and increase fuel efficiency, the front pillars have an optimized design with the right slant angle. Both the front set of pillars get a blackened piano finish to make the side look elegant and also impose a longer glasshouse area. Giving it a sporty character are roof rails, chrome tipped door handles and diamond cut alloys, all seen as standard on the top end SX(O) variant.The plastic cladding on the lower half of its length give it the quintessential SUV look with an added ruggedness.We liked the progressive shoulder line climbing from the front wheel arch and ending at a higher position meeting the rear tail lights. Subtly flared wheel arches are a nice touch. All SX trims get electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs without an auto folding option, this was surprising. Also, most variants make use of 205/65 R16 tyres with clean silver alloys except the top trim which gets more appealing 215 / 60 R17 tyres with diamond cut alloys. This mix and match of various options on these five variants will work with customers who are choosy about features.

It gets a neat and tidy arrangement at the rear with a large bulging tail gate and split combination tail lamps. The stronger waist line does make it look large in profile with a greater focus on higher luggage storage. There isn’t much except for a highly visible Hyundai logo, right at the centre. Cladding theme continues uniformly on the rear bumper with similar styled skid plates as seen on front. The only bit which could have been better is the positioning of the registration plate sitting at an intermittent position lower from the tail lights and higher from the bumper.

Hyundai Creta Comfort

It seems Hyundai has appointed a gentleman disguised as a commoner listening to everyone’s popular wish of features to have in a car as the Creta too, like other Hyundais, comes with a long list which includes many of first in the segment.There is a lot on offer but that doesn’t make it a clustered messy place to be in, making the cabin feel more comfortable than its rivals. It indeed does remind you of the arrangement in the Elite i20 and that is to Creta’s advantage as it is one the most appreciated cabins. The one that we had during our first drive was the SX+ variant, lower than the top trim SX(O). While it is all about leathers and ebony coloured trims in the SX(O), lower variants have to make do with fabric two-tone seats, they aren’t as appealing but your senses won’t mind.

And that is because the seats are well comforted at the right areas. The headrest, lumbar support and the bottom cushioning is impressive, needs a bit more under thigh support but is manageable. The reach and positioning of buttons and knobs for front occupants is simply practical. Even though the dashboard has a wide winged design, it doesn’t make your knees sweat. There is plenty of room in the front with a dead pedal for the necessary relief on highways. The driver seat also gets height adjustment.Coming to the rear zone, it gets separate AC vents which are a must for the ones seated behind especially under challenging weather conditions. The incline angle is decent and similar to the front seats, just has tad less of under thigh support. While the seats are comforting enough for long journeys, there is a slight problem and that is cause of the way it looks. Throttle response is good and power delivery is linear. The top-end performance isn’t the best but the low-end and mid-range are very good. The NVH levels are also fantastic. The ARAI-claimed fuel efficiency is 20.14 km/l and 17.36 km/l for MT and AT respectively but in real world conditions, you can expect 10-14 km/l from the MT and 9-13 km/l from the AT.

The diesel engine has been upgraded from the older 1.1-litre unit to a larger 1.2-litre U2 CRDI unit which now produces 75 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 190 Nm of torque from 1750-2250 RPM. The engine has been tuned very nicely and turbo lag has been negated effectively. The engine has a good surge of power right from 1600-1700 RPM and continues till 3500-4000 RPM and the oil-burner feels very peppy. The engine is quite noisy though. The 5-speed gearbox is a charm and gearshifts are smooth. The ARAI-claimed efficiency is 25.4 km/l and you can easily expect 17-22 km/l in real world conditions.

In terms of handling, the Xcent does not disappoint. It manages to hold in tight corners without losing control. Even at high speeds on a straight line, it holds on to the road with great confidence. It has been a case of badge engineering where the cars don’t just share underpinnings, but all the body panels too. The next in line is the Nissan Terrano, the cloned version of the Renault Duster. Nissan Terrano Look

As you can clearly notice in the images, the only SUV offering from Nissan for the Indian market has not received any significant changes to the exterior. Thus it still continues to look rugged and bold.

Towards the front profile, the Terrano gets a signature grille with lots of chrome elements on it. The headlamp unit too remains unchanged and gets a four pod design which looks not only good but also is functional at the same time. Towards the side profile, the SUV gets a machined alloy wheels which look not only rugged but also robust at the same time. Towards the side profile, you will also notice the electrically retractable ORVM with integrated side turn indicators. The silver finished roof rails also helps the Terrano to stand out in the crowd.Nissan India has now added one more colour options in the form of new Sandstone Brown besides the already existing four colour options.

Nissan Terrano Comfort

The cabin of the Terrano attempts a somewhat similar freshening up just like the redesigned exterior. But, the extent of change inside the Terrano is much lower than the outside. However, Nissan engineers have managed to still lift up the overall premiumness of the cabin, though this might be more evident in the top-trim variants. There is a slight variation in the interior colour theme, though the dashboard layout and major elements are mostly carry-forwards. There are a few changes such as the flip open storage box at the top of the centre stack. The combination of circular and rectangular aircon vents and the piano-black finish for the centre stack caught my attention in my test mule.

Faux wood door handles and the chrome bits all around the cabin are other elements that help boost the feeling of quality inside the Terrano. The rear aircon vents positioned between the two front seats (also found in the Duster) will be a blessing during the forthcoming summer. The steering wheel and the instrument cluster also see some modifications.

Nissan Terrano Gearbox

Like we already mentioned above there are no mechanical changes under the hood of the updated Terrano. The SUV still is powered by the same 1.6-litre petrol engine that produces about 104 PS of peak power at 5, 850 rpm and 145 Nm of torque at 3750 rpm. The gasoline engine paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The diesel variant, on the other hand, gets the 1.5 Litre DCI unit which is available in two states of tune. The base trim diesel option produces about 85 Ps of peak power at 3750 Rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 1900 rpm. The more powerful diesel option produces about 110 Ps of peak power at 4000 rpm and 245 Nm of torque at 1750 rpm. Transmission option for the diesel drivetrain includes a 6-speed manual while there is also an option of a six speed AMT as well available with the top end trim.

The diesel engine takes 12 seconds to cross the 100 kmph mark and slates a top speed figure of 175kmph. On the other end, the Petrol version attains a top speed of 165 kmph and takes 10 seconds to cross the 100 kmph mark from standstill. Both engines are incredible performers and thus Terrano doesn’t feel sluggish at any given moment. The Nissan Terrano line-up has both Petrol and Diesel engine based versions. The Petrol engine is a 1.6-litre Multi Point Fuel Injection (MPFI) based engine, which is coded as 1.6K4M. It has the ability to displace 1598cc and can yield about 102.6bhp at 5850rpm along with 145Nm of peak torque value at 3750rpm, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gear box. On the other hand, the diesel variants come with two power options, 85PS (83.8bhp) and the other more powerful 110PS (108.5bhp). This fuel efficient 1461cc, K9K, dCi diesel engine is quite powerful and is delivering an impressive performance. It offers a peak torque of 248Nm at 2250rpm in combination with a maximum power output of 108.5bhp at 3900rpm. The 1.5-litre diesel engine is mated with a six speed manual transmission gear box.

Nissan Terrano boasts of a staunch and robust braking system. The front wheels of the compact SUV are incorporated with discs which make braking deft. While the front axle of the SUV has an independent McPherson strut type of mechanism with a coil spring and also a highly advanced anti-roll bar; the rear axle gets a torsion beam axle along with coil springs and a similar anti-roll bar for enhanced comfort for the rear passengers. Both these systems put together ensure that the passengers as well as the SUV are stable at all times. The top-end versions of the Terrano are equipped with the sophisticated Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) along with electronic brake force distribution technology, coupled with brake assist and a stability control module to further upgrade the braking mechanism of the SUV. Nissan Terrano Bottomline

The Terrano’s ride quality is big plus when compared to the other vehicles in its class. The suspension soaks up bad roads really well, without allowing it to really rattle the car. There is just a tad bit of body roll that I can feel when I run downhill on a windy stretch of road and while flicking in and out of the corners. But that is to be expected from a suspension set up that is meant to accommodate and please.

Just like the Duster, the Terrano’s USPs are right there – a torquey, healthy engine, good ride quality, much better on-road poise at high speeds and around corners and the right size. But, in the Terrano what is different is the design, which compared to the current Duster, might be considered just that bit more modern and appealing.

Hyundai Grand i10 Look

Even design wise, the Grand is a complete departure from its predecessor. It’s longer, wider and almost as tall – tall enough to classify it as a tall boy. But thanks to its increased dimensions, you’d be hard pressed to say that it actually falls in this category. Overall the styling has taken quite a few steps away from quirky “Kei” car and a big leap towards proper Euro supermini. The Fluidic design language has evolved further with this car and the headlights are now much sharper, the car sports a much larger one piece grille and a funkier design around the fog lights which really spruces up the front end. Unlike a lot of other design efforts which seem to lose steam as they progress from the front to the rear, the Grand makes no such faux pas. The strong shoulder line accentuates the width of the car and the uniquely shaped waistline molding and 8-spoke diamond cut alloy wheels (on the top end Asta model that is) really accentuate the Grand’s more mature design. At the back, you see a clear departure from regular Hyundai hatchback design with brand new taillights, chunky reflectors integrated into the bumper and lots of slashes and cuts all around. Bottom line is that the Grand i10 is beautiful to behold, no matter what angle you look at it from and manages a wonderful mix of radical design and comforting conventionality to keep everyone happy.

Hyundai Grand i10 Comfort

Inside the car, a lot of beige has been used across all the variants for that premium feel. To top that, Hyundai has mated the beige color smartly with the black color, so the places which are more accessible to hands are covered in black to save them from getting dirty quickly. The interior also gets blue illumination, which looks brilliant at night. The blue illumination makes the car look very premium from the inside, and the feature is standard across all the variants. Hyundai has also used the space in the car very smartly, and has put map pockets in the front and rear seats of the car for keeping papers and other small things. There are pockets behind the front passenger seat as well. The pockets are missing from the base Era variant though. Hyundai’s flowing design follows the car everywhere and even the interiors are designed keeping the Fluidic theme in mind.

The door handles are curved, and are chrome painted in the Sportz, Sportz(O) and Asta models for the premium feel. Chrome is also visible on the gear knob and parking lever tip of the Sportz and Asta models. The top variant Asta gets the leather-wrapped steering wheel, which feels amazing to hold and feel. The centre display of the Grand i10 looks soothing and very futuristic. The top of the line variants Sportz(O) and Asta now offers 7-inch infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition it also doubles up as a display for reverse parking camera. The Sportz get a 5-inch screen with no support for Android Auto and CarPlay. Era and Magna do not get a touch screen. Even the base variant gets the tachometer, which is very important for shifting gears correctly. The driver infotainment gets many warning lamps and indicators, which are standard across all the variants. The manual version of the car gets gearshift indicators for those perfectly-timed shifts for better fuel efficiency and more power. The door and tailgate ajar lamp saves the car from getting damaged and prevents accidents. There is also a low fuel indicator and driver seatbelt warning lamp across every variant. Multi Information Display or better known as MID brings many information from the car to the driver at one place. There is a digital clock, dual trip meter, and uncommon features like average vehicle speed and engine running time, which helps a lot during long trips. Hyundai Grand i10 has a good audio system with support for USB, Bluetooth and Aux-in available across Sportz, Sportz(O) and Asta variants with a 4-speaker set-up.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel in the top model also features the audio, bluetooth voice recognition controls for easy access. Convenience has taken a special attention with the Grand i10. Every variant gets motor-driven electric power steering for smooth drives around the city and does not take much effort to manoeuvre the vehicle. All the variants also get manual AC with heater, tinted windows and power outlets. Hyundai has really taken serious steps to make the vehicle very convenient, and the power outlets on the front and rear show that effort of the company. There are also power windows across all the models. The base version Era misses out on rear power outlets and power windows though. There are also electrically-adjustable outside mirrors across all the variants except Era which offers manual controls. There are also rear AC vents, a passenger and vanity tray, the base model gets deprived of these features as well. The Sportz and Asta models get the cooled glove box, push button start/stop and tilt steering. Driver seat height adjustment and adjustable rear seat headrests are exclusive to the top end Asta model only.

Hyundai Grand i10 Gearbox

As with almost all other Hyundai cars available at the moment, the Grand i10 offers both petrol and diesel as a choice for motive force. The petrol engine here is the 1.2-litre KAPPA mill which has really proved itself a worthy choice for quite some time in both the i20 and the older i10. The most exciting thing under the hood though is a brand new cutting-edge 1.1-litre U2 diesel engine. It might only have three cylinders, but this state-of-the-art motor produces 71PS of power at 4,000rpm and 160Nm of peak torque coming it between 1,500 and 2,750rpm. What strikes you most about this engine is just how refined it can be. A small amount of rumble does creep into the cabin at idle rpm, but that is to be expected from a car in this segment. Performance isn’t what you would call blistering, with the run to 100km/h from a standstill dispensed off in a fairly ponderous 17.5 seconds. At 150km/h, top speed too isn’t anything to write home about, but it’s pretty much at par with others in this segment. However it’s not about mere numbers and figures with this motor. The most impressive thing about this mill is its sheer drivability, even at fairly low engine speeds. It pretty much picks up in any gear and driving around even in extremely heavy traffic conditions is an absolute breeze. But in the higher range of the rpm spectrum, it does lose steam rather quickly. So not the ultimate engine for high-speed highway cruising. On the other hand, the clutch action is long, but quite light and the 5-speed manual gearbox is one of the slickest shifters we’ve seen in a long time. With a combination like that coupled with shortish ratios for the first three gears, the Grand i10 is at its absolute best in driving about in the urban jungle.

Hyundai hasn’t just worked magic with the engine and gearbox though. What impressed us most was the work done on the suspension. Compared to other hatchbacks from the same company, the Grand i10 seems significantly better sprung. This setup is still fairly soft mind you, but through long undulations, the car doesn’t wallow at all and even if you show it some corners, the body roll, though present, feels extremely well controlled. So what you end up with is brilliant ride quality over even the most broken of roads without the suspension feeling wishy-washy in any way. In fact, even when you take the Grand all the way up to its top speed on a wide open highway, the car feels extremely well settled even without carrying a full complement of occupants. Brakes too have good feel and bite and can bring the car to a dead stop from 80km/h in less than 30 metres. Honestly, you would have to be extremely ham-fisted and lead-footed to find yourself in a hairy situation with this Grand.

Hyundai has tweaked the suspension of the new Grand i10, and boy what a difference it has made. Show the car a set of bad roads and it gobbles up all of it without breaking a sweat. Potholes and undulations, particularly, are absorbed with only a muted thump entering the cabin. Coupled with good NVH characteristics, the ride in the new Grand i10 is surprisingly well damped and quiet, unlike the loud thuds that you hear in some of Maruti Suzuki’s small cars. The ride quality clearly feels akin to a bigger car, and this surely is one of the Grand i10’s biggest plus points.The changes to the suspension have also resulted in improved handling, although the soft set-up does result in slight body roll when you push the car around the bends. However, it is not scary at all and I was very impressed with the car’s grip levels and ability to stick to an intended line.

The one aspect that Hyundai could have improved is steering feedback at high speeds. I wish it weighed up a little more which would have elevated the driving experience to quite an extent. That said, I remember how numb the steering felt in the previous car, so the improvement in this unit is more than welcome.The brakes offer a strong bite and pedal feel is quite firm too. However, some may feel the bite is a bit too sharp at low speeds. Personally, I like the set-up as it feels quite reassuring in an emergency stop. Our brake tests saw the car come to a standstill from 100kmph in 3.1 seconds, covering 42.7 metres in the process.

The braking prowess of the Grand i10 is nothing less than impressive. The car comes with front disc brakes and rear drum options. The brakes have a good bite and can bring the car to stop within a small distance. On the top variant, Asta, Hyundai offers one of the most advanced anti-lock braking system, which further brings down the stopping distance and is helpful in tricky situations.There is standard driver airbag available with all variants of the Grand i10. However, the company offers the passenger airbags with the top-end models only, which does show a highlight in the bill. Talking about safety, the Grand gets day/night mirror across all the variants except the base Era model. Hyundai also gives rear defogger as a part of equipment with the top variants. Hyundai provides a smart key with the Asta trims, which are convenient to use can be used to unlock the doors which work based on proximity to the key. The Magna version and other lower variants get standard keyless entry while Era does not offer keyless entry. The engine immobilizer, which surely reduces a lot of thefts, is standard across all the variants.

Hyundai Grand i10 is a very affordable car and by all means is the best choice in its segment. The Grand i10 has a long list of features, which look very good and inviting on paper. The base model somehow misses out on few key things like ABS and passenger airbag. This mid-sized hatchback looks very pleasing to the eyes and comparatively looks better than most cars on the road. The Hyundai Grand i10 packs almost every feature needed in a car in a compact package. With the segment-first features, like the integrated memory, Hyundai has surely attracted many tech-savvy buyers towards the new model.

The elegant-looking diamond-cut alloys make the car even more appealing.
