Hyundai Xcent Performance & First Drive

Hyundai Xcent Overview

Hyundai’s first offering for the compact sedan segment in India was the Accent Viva which was launched very long back. As the market hadn’t matured properly then, the Accent Viva didn’t sell in good numbers despite the regular Accent selling really well back then. The Korean automaker then introduced the Xcent in 2014, which is based on the Grand i10 and this compact sedan has been a good seller for Hyundai. The vehicle has now got a mid-life facelift following the Grand i10 so let us find out what additional things does the Xcent now offer. View offers on Hyundai Cars from Hyundai dealers in Hyderabad at Autozhop

Hyundai Xcent Look

It is based on the Grandi10 hatchback and thus borrows similar looks. It is just an additional boot which makes all the difference. Hyundai’s much acclaimed Fluidic Design language has really worked well on all its cars. However, the Xcent doesn’t look as ‘Wow!’ as other Hyundais in India. The hexagonal grille is bold in design. The headlights sweep back towards the side as well as on the bonnet making it look large. The lower section of the front bumper has multiple crease lines.

The Xcent too gets machined alloy wheels like the Grandi10. The side profile looks balanced with the additional boot. It does not look as coarse as the Swift DZire. It has a wheelbase of 2425mm which is exactly the same in the hatchback. This effectively means the interior space remains untouched but this time the luggage space has been increasedThe new rear end looks smart and crisp with no additional lines. It has been kept clean without giving any fussy design elements. The tail lamps are again similar in design but the reflection shape and style has been changed in the Xcent which makes it look clean.

Hyundai Xcent Comfort

Inside, it’s the same story. Almost all the bits are from the Grand i10 and even though we have seen this interior styling before, it is pretty descent quality and is well put together. The two-tone interior does add a sense of roominess to the cabin. The plastics are of premium quality which enhance the driving experience. The center console is simple and is divided into two distinct parts. The upper section houses the audio system which comes with USB connectivity with small display screen in the center. HVAC controls are provided in the lower part of the console.

The steering wheel is a multi-functional unit, same as the Grand i10. The instrument binnacle is simple and clear with a large speedometer with a blue back light in the center and a tachometer on one side. Fuel gauge and temperature gauges take up the right hand side of the unit. The cabin of the new Hyundai Xcent feels airy and has a premium feel to it. There’s loads of headroom thanks to the tall profile of the car. It boasts of decent legroom for rear seat passengers and is claimed to have the largest trunk in the segment. Another ‘segment first’ is the rear air conditioning vent.

There are few additional features which are available with the Xcent sedan for example the top of the line SX variant gets automatic climate control and a rear-view camera. Steering-mounted audio controls, an audio system with Aux, USB, Bluetooth and 1GB of internal storage. The top SX trims also gets 14 inch wheels as standard but it also gets an option to upgrade to a 15-inch ‘diamond cut’ alloys as well.

Hyundai Xcent Gearbox

The Hyundai Xcent is offered with both petrol and diesel engines. Talking about the petrol engine first, no changes have been made to the 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT unit. It is mated to either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a dated 4-speed automatic transmission and produces 83 PS of power at 6000 RPM and 114 Nm of torque at 4000 RPM. Throttle response is good and power delivery is linear. The top-end performance isn’t the best but the low-end and mid-range are very good. The NVH levels are also fantastic. The ARAI-claimed fuel efficiency is 20.14 km/l and 17.36 km/l for MT and AT respectively but in real world conditions, you can expect 10-14 km/l from the MT and 9-13 km/l from the AT.

The diesel engine has been upgraded from the older 1.1-litre unit to a larger 1.2-litre U2 CRDI unit which now produces 75 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 190 Nm of torque from 1750-2250 RPM. The engine has been tuned very nicely and turbo lag has been negated effectively. The engine has a good surge of power right from 1600-1700 RPM and continues till 3500-4000 RPM and the oil-burner feels very peppy. The engine is quite noisy though. The 5-speed gearbox is a charm and gearshifts are smooth. The ARAI-claimed efficiency is 25.4 km/l and you can easily expect 17-22 km/l in real world conditions.

Hyundai Xcent Rideing

In terms of handling, the Xcent does not disappoint. It manages to hold in tight corners without losing control. Even at high speeds on a straight line, it holds on to the road with great confidence. The driving dynamics of the Xcent is impressive. The length of the car has been increased but then that has not changed the way this one handles. The suspension offers a dampened ride and thus even on rough roads, the Xcent performs good.Even while manoeuvring it in the city, it feels very convenient. It also gets a reverse parking sensor affixed on the rear view mirror though; it is not convenient to use because of the daylight reflections falling on the rear view mirror.

Hyundai Xcent Safety

2017 Hyundai Xcent comes with disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The company has offered dual front airbags as standard fitment across the entire variant line-up of the new sedan. In addition, several premium features such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Impact Sensing Auto Door Unlock, Keyless entry with Smart Key, Rear Parking Sensors, Rear Camera with display on audio, Central Locking, etc. are available with the top-end variants. Though, it looks bleaker than the preceding model, which had ABS as standard safety feature. Also, the other sedans in the segment come equipped with more safety features than Xcent.

The Xcent doesn’t really have any major downsides except the handling part and is a very good contender in the compact sedan segment and the pricing of the car is attractive enough too.
