The Toyota Platinum Etios is an entry level sedan by the Japanese carmaker and is sold with a 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre diesel engine. Like its hatchback sibling, the Etios Liva, the Platinum Etios also has ABS and dual front airbags as standard and is claimed to have best in class air conditioning. Cabin space and boot space are the best in its price segment, with the volume of the latter rated at 592 litres. Toyota Etios Look

Compared to the outgoing model, the new Toyota Etios Platinum do pose an appealing stance. Updates can be seen at the front with the new wider bumper and revised grille to give a touch of sportiness. The carmaker hasn’t gone extreme when it comes to using chrome appliques. The use of carbon-fibre texture, in fact, looks really nice on the front bumper. The v-shaped grille is mounted high with black inserts and the chrome studded signature mark at the centre looks cool. The rounded fog lamps now get boomerang styled highlighted enclosure.

The side profile of Etios largely remains intact except the new set of alloys and the same thick protruding strip running in the middle. The rear end of the car feature new bumper and thick chrome slat with red reflectors on the boot lid connecting the two tail lamps. Overall, the changes are subtle but do provide a bit of youthful touch to the car.

The inside ambience of Toyota Platinum Etios is perfectly in sync with its elegant exterior. The bi-tonal premium interior is high on quality and is pleasing to the eyes. The tri-spoke steering wheel has a silver accent on it and the door trim has fabric insertions. The shift knob is accented with chrome and the door armrests have a wood grain finish. The seats are comfortably wide, and the sedan provides adequate legroom and headroom. The driver’s seat is height adjustable and the front headrest can also be adjusted. The pillow-type headrests on the rear seats add to the comfort. There are sun visors on the driver’s and the co-passenger’s sides. The fuel lid and tailgate are remote-operated. To further enhance convenience, the power window on the driver’s side has the auto-down function, the electric power steering comes with tilt mechanism, the glove box is cooled and 12 V power outlets are provided at the front. The ORVMs can be adjusted internally using an electronic lever. Platinum Etios also comes with a tachometer, a digital tripmeter, front cabin lights and rear defogger. The air conditioning unit is effective, and that apart, the sedan has a heater and an air filter.

The in-cabin entertainment is looked after by the audio system that comes with a remote. To keep the driver focused, the steering wheel has audio controls mounted on it. The Toyota Platinum Etios is powered by two engines, a 1,496 cc petrol and a 1,364 cc diesel unit. Power and torque generated by the petrol is 88.7hp at 5,600 rpm and 132Nm at 3,000 rpm. The diesel unit produces 67hp at 3,800 rpm and 170Nm between 1,800 rpm and 2,400 rpm. Both engines are refined and inclined towards fuel efficiency.The Toyota Platinum Etios is sold with a 5-speed gearbox on both petrol and diesel variants. Both transmissions offer smooth gear changes and the clutch is light. The gear ratios are tuned for fuel efficiency and do not require frequent shifting in traffic.

The Toyota Platinum Etios has a certified mileage of 16.78 km/l for the petrol variants and 23.79 km/l for the diesel engine variants. These fuel efficiency figures are at par with segment standards.As mechanically Etios remain untouched, the fuel efficiency is also the same. Where the diesel engine returns ARAI certified mileage of 23.59kmpl, the petrol engine, on the other hand, returns 16.78kmpl.

Toyota Platinum Etios is endowed with a MacPherson Strut type suspension system for the front axle. Its rear axle has torsion beam type suspension. The turning radius of Toyota Platinum Etios is 4.9 m and it offers a minimum ground clearance of 170 mm.The company claims that it has worked upon the shock absorbers. While the ride quality is undoubtedly very good but isn’t different as compared to the earlier version. However, as the suspension has been tuned, one can expect a slight slandering into the corners.The car never feels less composed and remains stable regardless of the road conditions. The steering also feels nice and comfortable to operate.

The performance of ABS+EBD brakes is confident and performs just as expected. One of the biggest talking points of the car in this version is the updates in the safety department. The sedan now comes equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX mounts, keyless entry and driver seat belt warning as standard features. Move on to the top variants and you also get front fog lamps and reverse parking sensors. The carmaker has also reinforced the chassis so that it could perform better in case of crash.
