Volkswagen has unveiled the new sixth-generation Polo at a media reception held at its Wolfsburg headquarters in Germany. The all-new hatchback is an outwardly larger, significantly roomier and more technically sophisticated model than today’s eight-year-old car.Set to make its public debut at the upcoming Frankfurt motor show, the new Polo will be produced in five-door hatchback form only, with buyers offered the choice of up to six engines – the most powerful being a range-topping 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit good for 200hp powering the GTi model. Based around the German carmaker’s MQB A0 platform – the old car was underpinned by VW’s PQ25 platform, the new Volkswagen has grown quite significantly. Measuring in at 4,053mm in length, 1,7511mm in width and 1,446mm in height, it is 81mm longer, 63mm wider and 7mm lower than its predecessor. The wheelbase too is now 94mm longer at 2,564mm.Despite being immediately recognisable as a Volkswagen, VW designers have incorporated a number of new design elements on the new car, including a distinctive swage line graphic that provides additional structure to the bodywork in an area above the door handles.

Exterior looks have not changed much, and the family identity is still very much there. At the front, the three-strip chrome grille has been replaced in favour of a single-slat chrome grille. The company has toned down the usage of chrome in and around the front grille, which makes it look bold and rugged. The hatchback boasts an all-new front bumper, which compliments well the aforementioned thick striped grille around the air dam. The headlamp cluster along with the twin fog lamps looks good, although disappointingly daytime-running lights (DRL) has been left out this time. The Polo also benefits from an all new set of alloys and body-coloured door handles. The design of the tail-lamp cluster has also been tweaked slightly. Every change done to the exteriors, as mentioned before, are very slight and will only be noticeable to the practiced eye. Else, they are minor – an oh, of course – a new colour Copper Orange is added to the prevailing shades of Candy White, Night Blue, Flash Red, Carbon Steel, and Reflex Silver.

Volkswagen has been updating the Polo’s interiors from time to time and now the premium hatchback comes loaded with features like touchscreen infotainment system, reverse parking camera, satellite navigation, USB and aux in-put, steering mounted audio controls. The GT range has full black interiors and this makes it look sportier. The space in the front row is good, however it is the second row that is tight on space making it difficult for tall people to seat behind.A number of new features have been added to make driving even more comfortable, and this includes new interior upholstery and finishes. The drivers’ seat is now height adjustable for extended comfort and convenience. The steering wheel is all new, with a flat bottom to give it a sporty feel and with multi-function buttons on the top models. The top end versions also get a piano finish near the Bluetooth and voice command buttons – all adding a rich feel to the car. The dual tone dashboard is also premium looking along with the all-new centre console. There are silver coloured elements all around, instead of dreary black and they help liven up the interior. The instrument cluster consists of tachometer, speedometer, odometer and trip meter. The centre multi-function display, which was bright red in colour and sometimes jarring, has been replaced with a monochrome display which is much more soothing to the eyes. A trip computer however is only part of the top models.

Manufacturers are getting rid of older, inefficient engines and replacing them with cleaner, more efficient, smaller-capacity units to meet stringent emission norms. Volkswagen has done just this on the Polo hatchback and replaced the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine with an all-new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder unit, codenamed EA211.This naturally aspirated 999cc may be smaller but it still makes a similar 76hp. But where the new engine loses out is torque; it pushes out only 95Nm compared to the earlier 1.2’s 110Nm.The kerb weight of the new Polo is down by 14kg, but performance still isn’t effortless. There’s a bit of a delay when you tap the accelerator and the engine takes its time to get moving. Overtaking needs planning and even the mid-range isn’t punchy. It will spin all the way to its 6,500rpm redline, with power and performance being built in a linear manner; but getting there takes a long time.

Outright acceleration is close to the 1.2 Polo’s, taking 16.5sec to reach 100kph from standstill. However, at idle, this engine is as silent as the Maruti Swift petrol. When it comes to first impressions, the refinement is remarkable. Get on the move, though, and there’s a hint of a rattle from the engine; spin it hard and it emanates a three-cylinder thrum, like before. Fuel efficiency is said to have improved by 2.31kpl, to a claimed 18.78kpl.The new five-speed gearbox is effortless and has short throws. Also, reverse gear isn’t up and away from the first anymore. It is in a more conventional place, beside the fourth (under fifth). The clutch pedal has a long travel with a springy action, requiring a bit more effort than usual. The steering, however, is direct and nicely weighted. And, as before, ride and handling are excellent.

The Polo is quite a bit of a drivers’ car, if such a term can be used here, The new leather strapped 3-spoke speed sensing electronic power steering makes handling effortless. The tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel is fairly light and responds instantly to the driver’s directional inputs. The sporty flat-bottom steering wheel design enables an individual to maneuver the hatchback quite comfortably through narrow roads and thick traffic. Coming on to the performance, the Polo is fairly competent. The diesel variants of Polo are capable of accomplishing the 100-kmph milestone from standstill in a shade over 13 seconds while clocking a respectable 165-kmph top speed. The petrol is a fair bit slower to 100-kmph, while the top whack is around 150kmph. Volkswagen Polo Verdict

The all-new Polo will go on sale internationally by the end of the year with production expected to start shortly. For India, Volkswagen recently signed an MoU with Tata Motors to use the latter’s AMP platform to develop models for the country. So, while a Polo replacement could be on the cards, it is yet unknown if VW will bring in a reengineered version of the all-new international model shown here or launch an indigenously developed alternative.Well, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration if it is termed the most complete hatchback ever seen in India in this price segment.
