Before this review, I had never driven or travelled inside a Toyota Fortuner. I had an image of this SUV as a bulky, scary and a huge vehicle. It used to be scary in traffic signals when this monstrous thing stood beside my humble tiny Tata Nano with the scare of being run over by it.The 2012 Toyota Fortuner now incorporates the all new Toyota front face which is seen on the latest generation Camry and Innova too. The new face has made the Fortuner a smarter looking SUV unlike the earlier version.

On the front profile, the intake scoop has got a tag bigger. The new clear finished headlights are in line with the chunky chrome radiator grille. They wrap around from the grille to the side panel. Even the lower jaw has been redesigned with smart fog lamp design. The hidden and subtle profile on the front face now makes the Fortuner a well proportioned design.Even though only the face has got majority of changes, it has left an impact throughout the design which looks good sans the bulky character. The new Fortuner also gets the 17inch 12 spoke alloy wheels which blend in neatly.

Like the face, the rear profile has been reworked too. The rear tail door now features the name etched on a chrome line between the tail lamps which is similar to the other SUVs of Toyota. The tail lamps design has been changed too from the simple horizontal lines to twin circles. Even the bumper has been reworked to match with the new design.Overall, the Fortuner has lost its bulky character and looks like a new age refined SUV. It also boasts of some lines and curves inspired from the Land Cruiser but in a subtle way.

Get inside the cabin and the design flow of the new Fortuner’s dashboard will remind you of the Innova Crysta to some extent. The cabin feels rich and premium than before in terms of quality and finish and also the attention to detail. The new steering wheel feels good to hold having a matte silver lower half. The instrument cluster is big and easy to read which also has a sizeable MID display that shows all the necessary info about the car and also information from the media system. The top half of the dashboard gets AC vents and the centre console is uniquely highlighted with silver accents along with a dash of leatherette upholstery with double stitching that gives you a premium car feel.

The infotainment system consists of a big 7.0-inch touch-screen display with USB, AUX, DVD, MP3 and Bluetooth connectivity for music streaming and telephony. It comes with a 6-speaker audio system that offers decent aural experience. Sadly there is no Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, which is the trending car tech on offer these days. It makes the cabin feel rich and the seats offer tremendous support for the back and under-thighs. The second row has ample space with good legroom, kneeroom and shoulder room but under-thigh support is lacking and seating three people abreast isn’t a good idea. The third row is a tight fit for adult passengers specially compared to the more spacious Innova Crysta’s third row seating, as one sits low down with the knees close to the chest and poor under-thigh support.

There are low storage spaces in the cabin (considering how many more bottle holders are there in the Innova Crysta) in spite of it having dual glove box including one cooled compartment, two bottle holders on the dashboard for the front passengers near the AC vents (can be converted into a cubby hole), cupholders near the centre console, all four door pockets (the last row also gets them) with bottle holders (the rear ones can’t be easily accessed due to the position of the bottle holders being too far back, one really has to open the door to easily get to the bottle), front arm rest storage, hooks for hanging bags and power sockets for all three rows. Boot space is pretty decent, the third row has 50:50 split that fold up and the second row have 60:40 split so you can easily fit luggage and accommodate four passengers (the last row doesn’t have much space and a third passenger in the second row is a tight squeeze, the seat too is hard and putting the roof mounted seatbelt on takes quite a lot of time) comfortably in the new Fortuner. The next generation Toyota Fortuner gets new engines. The SUV will be powered by a 2.8 litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine which will replace the existing 3.0 liter unit. This small is more capble and also fuel efficient at the same time producing aqbout 174 HP of peak power. A new 6-speed manual and a new 6-speed automatic transmission are available as gearbox options. The 2.8 litre engine makes 420 Nm of torque with manual transmission and 450 Nm of torque in an automatic transmission equipped vehicle. The Fortuner gets an all-wheel drive gearbox with high and low range to enhance its off-roading ability. It also gets rear differential locks that give the SUV a go anywhere capability. The vehicle also gets new suspension. It uses double wishbones at the front and five-link coil springs at the rear. Ride quality is the one area where the new Fortuner both surprises and disappoints. The surprise is in the fact that this vehicle is not as soft and squishy as you would expect. Body roll in corners isn’t excessive, and there isn’t much nosedive under braking as well. In that sense, this is a big improvement over the old Fortuner, and while it is far from a sharp handler, it is definitely a step ahead. The disappointment comes in the subtle but constant jiggle that creeps through the suspension at all speeds. The Fortuner never settles into a smooth cruise and constantly produces a slight judder. At first I thought it was due to our rough concrete roads, but even on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, Mumbai’s smoothest tarmac road, the Fortuner still displayed the same behaviour, albeit more subdued. You soon get used to it, but it never truly feels comfortable.

No Fortuner test would be complete without taking the vehicle off-road, and this is where it really shines. It may look all up-market and fancy on the outside but make no mistake, this is still a hard-core SUV! I’m no off-road expert but I was really impressed with the Fortuner’s ability to find traction and climb almost any obstacle I pointed it at. When the wheels eventually started to spin, the selectable low-ratio mode helped it put the power down and extract itself out of some serious terrain. The 225mm ground clearance is plentiful, approach and departure angles are generous and there is impressive wheel articulation. Best of all, the Fortuner has a rugged, impervious feel off-road, and there’s no fear that you might break something. I really hope owners get to experience this side of their machines; it’s the Fortuner’s biggest virtue.

Now when the face turns up in your rearview mirror you’re more likely to give it a second glance. In the metal, and plastic, the changes are focussed around here. From the bumper, the quarter panels, the hood and the lamps everything has been redesigned to give the S-Cross a more “upright” SUV-like look. It starts with the new grille which is wider and higher-set. Spotting it will be easier because all that chrome on the grille is really hard to miss!

The headlamps have been reworked as well. They now get a smoked finish, and powering the projectors are LEDs. To accommodate the kink in the headlamp, the bumper gets an update as well. The creases are subdued no more, and that really makes the front end pop. Finally, the bonnet has had a shot of testosterone to supplement the angry face. The two crisp pleats on the hood do just enough to go along with the other updated elements.

Updates to the side profile might just go unnoticed. But they do lend the S-Cross a fresh flavour. We’re glad the alloys don’t look like wheel caps anymore. The 16-inch alloy wheels now get a simpler design and a two-tone finish. It’s also shod with larger 215/60 rubber which makes the car looks ever so slightly raised. If you dig into the numbers, you’ll find that the updated S-Cross is 5mm taller and 20mm wider.Coming to the rear, you’ll notice a change only if you spot the Alpha variant. The LED taillamps (along with the projector headlamps) are available only on the top trim. If you’re keen-eyed you will also spot the tiny ‘SmartHybrid’ badge.

There aren’t many noticeable changes inside the cabin. And not that there was a serious requirement in the first place. Still, the easy-to-use touch screen system now gets Android Auto in addition to Apple CarPlay. A good addition for the tech-savvy potential buyers. Then, the instrument cluster gets an SHVS display, pointing at the hybrid technology under the hood. There’s also a new engine auto start-stop cancel switch. And, visibly even if everything almost remains the same, there are a few touch ups made to add to the premium feel.

This includes chrome accents instead of silver ones and leather finish on the driver arm rest and door pads. This top-spec Alpha trim continues to get features like leather seats, soft-feel material on the dashboard, cruise control, automatic climate control, keyless go etc. among other goodies. The Nexa shield ensures passenger safety with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and many more impact compliant safety features standard across the range.

The S-Cross continues to provide a good frontal visibility and has a reasonably spacious cabin with comfortable seats providing adequate support. This continues with the airy space in the second row thanks to the abundant shoulder room sufficient for three adults as well. There’s good legroom too, but headroom might be a little tight for tall occupants.

Also, we would have loved it if the carmaker could have added rear AC vents this time. Nonetheless, the 353-litre boot-space with numerous adjustments with the 60:40 split rear seat makes for a big space to eat up all kinds of luggage. Two big bags and a few backpacks can be easily accommodated.

The S-Cross now comes with just one engine as Maruti has dropped the previous 1.6-litre diesel from the line-up, leaving just the 1.3-litre diesel engine. The 1.6-litre engine, fully imported (from Fiat), added Rs 1.4 lakh to the price of the car, which was just too steep for buyers to digest. But, with it gone, Maruti hasn’t supplemented the range with another engine. We would have also liked a petrol option but Maruti says it doesn’t have a suitable petrol motor at the moment. Also, there is no automatic option and, again, it’s down to the fact that the only option is an AMT, which the company is hesitant to use as the drive feel of an automated manual gearbox isn’t good enough for its flagship model. That leaves just the ubiquitous 1.3-litre diesel with a five-speed manual gearbox for the S-Cross, but the engine does see something new with the addition of Maruti’s smart-hybrid technology. If you have any experience driving a 1.3 diesel Maruti Suzuki in the past few years, the engine and gearbox will feel familiar. It’s a loud motor, but the NVH levels are the best we’ve seen from the current Maruti, and it stays relatively quiet in the cabin until you rev the engine above 3,000rpm. With 90hp and 200Nm of torque, the engine is adequate for the S-Cross for normal driving but when you want to drive with a sense of urgency, it’s a bit underpowered. The lack of grunt is most felt at low revs where this engine’s notorious turbo lag makes you work the five-speed gearbox a little bit more. On the bright side, the gearbox has a nice and slick feel while the clutch is not overly heavy.

This mild-hybrid set-up uses an Integrated Starter Generator motor to offer a mild torque-assist function that mainly aids fuel efficiency. It also features a start-stop system and brake energy regeneration. The system works seamlessly and the difference to the driving feel is negligible, but Maruti quotes a 7 percent increase in efficiency and a reduction in carbon dioxide outputs from around 115gm/km to 105.5gm/km.

The S-Cross continues to ride on the same suspension setup, but it has been slightly retuned for the bigger wheels it gets now. The highlight of the S-Cross’ ride has to be the cabin composure. Irrespective of the size or shape of the uncertainties on the road, the suspension setup ensures that you aren’t tossed around much. Yes, there’s some body roll, but it’s there only when you’re pushing the S-Cross close to triple digit speeds.

Tata say that every panel on the Hexa has been redesigned, so nothing is shared with the Aria. It clearly feels that way. Up close you can see that the aggression is crafted with class. There is a bull-horn like chrome strip sitting along the bottom of the grille. Gently rounded hexagonal forms texture the grille, giving a sense of keen attention. The clamshell bonnet with its masculine lines and the gaping air vents below give the Hexa’s claim to being an SUV quite a boost. The double-barrel headlamps are the only familiar bits here.

Switch around to the other end and you will see that there is a distinct squareness to the design. The small spoiler also accentuates a more upright stance. The slim D-pillar-mounted tail lamps have been done away with; instead there are chunky angular lamps that wrap around onto the tail gate. There’s enough chrome on the tailgate to please most Indians. The only awkward bit at the rear are the hockey-stick shaped lights that sit on the bumper.

Viewed from the side, the connection to the Aria is all too obvious. But, the rugged cladding and the 19-inch wheels help the Hexa strike a strong pose. The drop down elements from the roof towards the D-pillar and the fin on the shoulder give it a distinctive look. This is where you realise the Hexa is massive – it is longer and wider than the Mahindra XUV500, and the Innova Crysta. Its 2850mm wheelbase is also the longest, albeit identical to the Aria. There are clear benefits of these dimensions as we can see on the inside.

Tata Motors vehicle in the past. Its great how consistently we have said this of all the recent Tata products – meaning with each car, the company is taking big strides off late. The all-black interior gets a hearty dose of leather on the dashboard and on the door panels along with the leather seats on the top of the line variant. The seats are not only well designed but also feel top notch in terms of their tactile feel with a really good grain of leather running through as well. My only grouse is the slight lack of shoulder support on the front seats and the fact that the padding seems a little harder than it should be.

The central console gets a touchscreen infotainment unit with navigation (that syncs with your smartphone) and an array of options including bluetooth and smartphone integration. There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto but the Hexa does offer an app based control system that helps you play your collection of songs from a Juke-Car App – similar to the one in the Tiago. The app also has systems like service and diagnostic tools, navigation support and options to choose the ambient lighting (of which there are eight colour options). The multi-functional steering wheel gets cruise control, audio and telephone controls, and is height adjustable.

The simple gloss black console combined with a chrome wraparound is pleasing to the eye and so are the well placed chrome/brushed aluminium accent pieces around the dashboard and the AC vent. The climate control knobs are placed slightly lower than they should have but you do get used to them very quickly. The horizontal central console on the automatic houses the gear shift lever enclosed in a black bezel. You can get the Hexa in either a six or seven seater configuration. Rear leg space in both versions is quite healthy and the rear passengers get their own AC vents in the centre and on the B-pillars. The third row could get slightly cramped if you are of average height but passengers do get their own storage space and charging points. The Hexa’s large glass area makes it quite airy on the inside and even without something like a panoramic sunroof, it does feel very bright – especially good considering an all-black interior can seem to make the car appear to be cramped.

The Hexa will be available with a sole diesel engine, in two states of tune. The 2.2-litre, four-cylinder engine is the same powerplant we’ve seen do duties under the bonnet of the Safari, the Safari Storme and the Aria. The base XE variant of the Hexa gets a 150PS / 320Nm tune, whereas the mid XM and the top-spec XT variant gets 156PS / 400Nm to play around with. The other notable difference happens to be the gearbox. While the lower tune is available exclusively with a 5-speed manual, the latter gets a choice of a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

The engine comes to life with a shake and stir, just like we’re used to with big Tata vehicles. That said, it isn’t audible isn’t the cabin unless you decide to drive somewhere in a hurry. NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) levels are well within control and the cabin feels isolated from most of the fuss outside. The motor isn’t a particularly fun to drive unit, and feels more at ease at cruising speeds. Torque spread is even, and there isn’t a sudden gush of shove that will pin you to your seat. What you get instead is linear power delivery, with perceptible turbo lag under 1500rpm.

On the manual variants, the clutch is relatively light, but isn’t progressive at all. In fact, the first time you drive the Hexa, there’s a high chance you would stall it. The bite point is vague, which keeps you guessing. The other fly in the ointment, is the fact that the gears aren’t sure slotting – especially into fifth and sixth. But, get going and you get used to it pretty quickly.

You also get ‘Super Drive’ modes, that can be toggled on the fly. The effective modes are the result of varying calibrations of the engine and throttle map, the ESP and the ABS module that lets you set up the Hexa for intended usage. The modes on offer include Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough-Road. While it functions as a rear-wheel drive in Comfort and Dynamic, it transmits power to the front wheels in the other two modes. The modes work without a hiccup – but we preferred to leave it in Auto for most of the time we drove it.

The other big talking point about the Hexa is the 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine-transmission is easily one of the best in the segment. Certainly superior to the XUV500 AT. It is our pick out of the two since it makes driving so much easier. Shifts are smooth and quick and there’s barely any head-nod associated with automatics. It’s also reasonably fuel efficient, delivering a tested 11kmpl in city and 14.50kmpl on the highway. The gearbox selects ratios very well and responds to the varying weight of your right foot quickly. For a spot of spirited driving, you can always slot the gearbox into Sports mode, or into Manual altogether, to take charge. The transmission holds the revs in the meaty mid-range, giving you a healthy amount of torque in reserve for those roll-on accelerations. The 20-80kmph (kickdown) took a tested 7.68 seconds, while 0-100kmph takes about 12.3 seconds, which is on par with rivals like the Mahindra XUV500.

There’s no getting away from it, the way the Aria tackles bad roads is very impressive. The 19-inch wheels make short work of lightly broken roads. The way the recalibrated suspension shrugs off bigger potholes and ditches is shocking at first. Tata say that the use of multivalve dampers has helped the suspension tackle off-road better while improving ride quality, too. No doubt, you can feel that at work on our roads, too.

The chassis has also been made more rigid and this has helped tune the suspension better, too. The stiffer setup of the suspension at the rear has been done to make the Hexa more sporty to drive. What is apparent is that at highway speeds, it feels absolutely composed and does well to mask its size when being steered through traffic. However, if hustled hard you will feel the body roll, albeit in a controlled manner.

Disappointingly, the hydraulic steering feels light and vague at highways speeds. There is too much slack at centre and when turning into a corner, it ends up feeling disconnected and vague. Also, despite the disc brake setup all round, prodding the brake pedal inspires little confidence. It’s only when you push hard that pace drops as required. The Hexa could certainly do with more powerful brakes.
