In this second part of the Angular 2 Forms series we’re going to focus on another important aspect of form creation: input validation. Angular 2 makes form validation very easy. In the following you’ll learn how to use apply form validation by using HTML validation attributes and Angular 2 validation functionality.

Adding HTML Validation Attributes To Input Elements

Form validation in Angular 2 is based on HTML validation attributes. HTML validation attribute are used in input elements. One validation attribute has already been applied to all three input elements of our form: required. The required attribute defines that entering a value in the input field is mandatory. Now we’re going to add to more validation attributes to the first input field of the book title. Let’s define that we want the user to input a title which has a length between 5 and 30 characters:

To implement that constraint we’re adding the HTML validation attributes minlength and maxlength to the input element

Furthermore we’re using the pattern HTML validation attribute to for the URL input field:

Herewith we make sure that only valid URLs starting with http:// or https://can be entered in this input field.

Adding Validation Error Messages To The Form

In the next step we’re going to include error messages in the form template. If a certain validation rule is not met these messages should be displayed to the user:

First of all notice that template variables have been introduced for all three input elements by adding

  • #title="ngModel" to the title input control
  • #author="ngModel” to the author input control
  • #url="ngModel" to the URL input control

To display error messages a div element is included for every input element

NgIf is used to only display the content of this element if the assigned expression string is valid. The expression becomes valid if the control is in an error state (title.errors is true) and at the same time the control is marked is dirty (title.dirty is true) or is marked as touched (title.touch is true). This ensures the error messages are not displayed initially. If the dirty flag is set the value of the input element has been changed by the user. If the touched flag is set to true the control has been visited by the user.

For each error message another div block is placed inside of the previously described block:

The hidden attribute is bound to the negated value of the respective error. E.g. if title.errors.required is true (which means the field value is empty) the hidden attribute is set to false, so that the error message is displayed.

Using Angular 2 Validation CSS Classes

Angular 2 automatically attached CSS classes to the input elements depending on the state of the control. The following class names are used:

  • ng-touched: Control has been visited
  • ng-untouched: Control has not been visited
  • ng-dirty: Control’s value has been changed
  • ng-pristine: Control’s value hasn’t been changed
  • ng-valid: Control’s value is valid
  • ng-invalid: Control’s value isn’t valid

We can make use of those class by defining CSS styling which gives additional visual feedback to the user. Insert the following code into file book-form.component.css:

First, a red border is display on the left side of the input controls, indicating that a value is missing. If the user starts typing the and the field constraints are fulfilled the color changes to green.

Form Validation

The validation logic we’ve implemented so far is specific for single input fields of the form. We’re able to extend the logic to also take into consideration the validation status of the complete form. The evaluate if a form is valid or invalid can be useful to e.g. control if the form can be submitted or not.

Even at the outset you might think that sounds like quite the price jump – the current Volvo XC60 is Rs 48-52 lakh. Volvo’s reputation for tastefully simple interiors is on full display in the 2017 XC60. The inviting cabin features a distinctive “waterfall” center stack that gracefully joins the dash and center console. Operating the climate control is intuitive, but other systems might take some getting used to. In particular, the infotainment system is controlled via a multifunction knob on the center stack rather than a traditional touchscreen or dial mount where your hand naturally rests. In the 2017 XC60, you have a choice between a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a more powerful supercharged version of the same engine. The base engine should be potent enough for most drivers, with plenty of power for merging onto the highway or navigating city traffic. The more powerful optional engine is the right choice if you need to frequently haul a full complement of people and cargo or if you simply desire a little more punch when you press the accelerator. Both engines are paired with a slick-shifting automatic transmission that fades into the background.You can expect much of the same with the BMW X3. Its base engine is no slouch, but the available six-cylinder is more exhilarating. The Acura RDX only offers a single engine, a V6, which provides plenty of power for feisty driving. The base engine in the Volvo XC90 has 10 extra horsepower over the XC60, but the XC90’s heavier weight results in unimpressive acceleration. Both of the XC90’s optional engines feel more powerful by comparison.

The XC60 is among the most fuel-efficient nonhybrid vehicles in the class, getting 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway with the T5 FWD. With the T5 AWD, you can expect 20 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway. You are seated well up with a commanding position of the road, a short-ish dashboard and Volvo’s City safety tech to bank on to keep the car away from nicks at low speeds. Ground clearance at 230mm is class leading, the steering is light and weighs up well with speed so it’s quite an easy car to drive… until a dollop of torque steer kicks in. Yes there is plenty of it during hard acceleration runs, with all the 400Nm sent to the front wheels so as suggested earlier, the XC60 is best driven unhurried. The R-Design XC60 gets stiffer springs and firmer anti roll bars for enthusiastic handling but that does rob the SUV of its supple ride. It’s good and reassuring at high speed through undulations but low speed ride takes a beating. This isn’t the right setting for Indian road conditions which sadly won’t change as Volvos come in as CBUs. In addition to the stiffer springs and anti roll bars, the XC60 R-Design also gets a stiffer chassis compared to the stock XC60. We’d have to drive the two back to back to notice the difference but this car for a front wheel drive 1.85 tonne SUV does handle well. Sure it’s not on par with the agile BMW X3 but it holds its line through corners. The grip from a fantastic set of Pirelli PZero Rosso tyres gives the XC60 its handling edge and there is absolutely no tyre noise too while doing high speeds on the highway. Strong brake discs all round complement the sticky rubber to give you enough and more stopping power.

Standard safety features for all Volvo XC60 models include antilock brakes, traction and stability control, whiplash protection for the front seats, front seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and Volvo On Call emergency telematics. The TUV300 is definitely a far better looking SUV than the old Quanto which actually looks like a smaller version of the Xylo SUV. The TUV300 definitely has its own unique identity which is its biggest point. What also sets it apart is the fact that it actually shares its chassis structure with the new generation Scorpio.

Coming to the styling the TUV300 looks rugged and its design has been inspired from a battle tank. The rest of the side profile gets squarish looking wheel arches and an impressive ground clearance which helps it stick to its true blue SUV character. The side profile also gets stylish roof rails too which can help in easy mounting of lifestyle accessories and other useful things.

Towards the rear the first thing which will attract your attention is the spare wheel mounted on the tailgate while the large wrap around taillamps helps in giving the SUV contemporary styling.

Mahindra TUV300 Engine

The TUV300 comes with a 1.5-litre diesel engine called as mHawk80 that churns out 84bhp of power and 230Nm of maximum torque. This engine has been redone completely as it has dual mass flywheel, which has reduced its vibration. The NVH (noise vibration and harshness) is something that Mahindra has to work on, as the noise is quite prominent. The engine is very smooth and it is the ease of driving that makes a strong statement for it. So driving this SUV in city will be easier and there will not much effort required as one doesn’t has to shift gears. We drove the five-speed manual version of the TUV300 and the clutch was light and easy to drive. The TUV300 also comes with a five-speed AMT (automated manual transmission), however we haven’t got our hands it yet.

The best bit about the TUV300 is the ease of driving in city. You do not require to downshift that often. There is generally enough torque to pull the TUV300 and overtaking is easier. The TUV300 has a good torque that has make it a lot drivable in city, on highway it feels a bit out of steam if you push it too hard. The engine refinement is excellent for a diesel engine and what we appreciate the ease of driving. One sits in a commanding position and there is a clear view of the road. Jeep Compass Look

At first glance it is easy to see what inspired the designers of the Compass – its bigger brother, the Grand Cherokee; this is especially obvious when you look at it from the front. But apart from that, the Compass has its own identity.The Jeep Compass looks tough but also premium, sophisticatedly brawny almost. At the front, the highlights include the wide swath of black that stretches from one headlight to the other – including the modern take on Jeep’s iconic 7-slat (chrome lines) grille. The headlamps have a white element in them which help them pop out – an almost animalistic ‘eyes’ look, according to Jeep’s lead designer Mark Allen. They also contain LED guide lights, these are not DRLs – the actual DRLs actually sit on the bumper, just above the fog lamps. The clamshell hood is sculpted, with a slight power bulge in the middle, but the lines on it are not harsh – Jeep wanted the Compass to look more inviting.

The Jeep logo sits on the bonnet, just above the grille. A small horizontal slat-like grille on the painted part of the bumper helps break the huge swath between the main grille and air dam, it also directs air towards the radiator. The air dam is as wide as the main grille and taller – it adds to the muscular look at the front. A chrome lip at the bottom of the air dam adds a bit of bling.The bulk of the Compass is actually hidden well thanks to the use of a thick black cladding that goes all around the car. The Jeep-signature trapezoidal wheel arches contain the 17-inch silver alloy wheels shod with Firestone 225/60 section all-weather tyres; it feels like larger wheels could have made the Compass look even better. Surface detailing like the lines over the wheel arches, the prominent line that passes through the door handles onto the taillamps etc. make the compact SUV exciting to look at. Prominent ‘Compass’ badges are placed on both the front doors.

The crowning jewel of the design here is the chrome line that separates the contrast-painted roof from the rest of the body – this line goes all the way from one outside rearview mirror (ORVM), over the windows, swoops down under the rear windshield, up over the windows on the other side to finally end at the other ORVM. The roof line seems to flow down towards the rear, while the windowline rises up, adding a kink at the very end of the windowline and the C-pillar looks like – according to Jeep – a shark fin! The roof rails and the spoiler do not stand out too much.At the rear, the design of the Compass becomes a bit sedate. Highlights here include the wraparound rear windshield with the chrome line running across its base, a two-part taillamps which consists of a prominent LED guide-light (mimicking the units in the headlamps), a slightly recessed number plate holder and a two part bumper with integrated fog lamps. The Jeep logo sits on a carved out recess just below the windshield, a unique touch.Look all around and the Jeep Compass feels solid, the panel gaps are consistent and the paint quality is impressive. The Jeep Compass is offered in five colour options – Exotic Red, Brilliant Black, Minimal Grey, Vocal White and Hydro Blue (the colour of the car you see in the pictures).

Jeep Compass Cabin

The interiors of the JeepCompass aren’t very swanky and lavish. The dashboard is simple yet functional having a dual tone treatment. You’ve got a chunky three-spoke steering wheel with audio controls but there are some dummy buttons for the cruise control, which is not being offered in India. The instrument cluster looks premium having a huge MID in the middle and is easy to read. There is a neatly integrated touchscreen infotainment system. The user interface looks good but the touch quality is just average. Jeep offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone connectivity. The sound quality of the audio system is rich and quite satisfying. Some of the features missing in the Compass are sunroof, electrically adjustable seats, auto headlamps, auto wipers, etc.

The ingress and egress is quite comfortable in the Jeep Compass and you don’t feel like you are sitting in a hatchback like other compact SUVs, it is relatively high and you have a commanding driving position with a good view all around. The quality, fit and finish is nice and you can hardly find any cheap quality panels inside the cabin. The seats are very comfortable and supportive, there is ample legroom and headroom at the back. Even the under-thigh support of the seats are pretty good. The boot is also well spaced out and can accommodate a lot of luggage.

Jeep Compass Engine

The diesel version we drove comes powered with Fiat’s new generation 2.0-litre Multijet II engine that debuts in India on the Compass. It makes 173PS of power at 3750rpm and 350Nm of torque between 1750rpm and 2500rpm. The torque is available from 1800rpm onwards below which there is noticeable turbo lag. The narrow, winding roads of Goa didn’t quite allow us to accelerate hard but the motor did feel like the power delivery could have been punchier. The engine is smooth but sounds clattery at idle and is a tad noisy even on the go, especially after 3500rpm.

Interestingly, the diesel version of the Compass will not be offered with an automatic transmission and will only come with a six-speed manual transmission. There will be a 7-speed automatic on offer as well, but only with the petrol version powered by the 1.4-litre Multiair engine. That said, a new 9-speed automatic is expected to be offered in the diesel by the end of the calendar year. The manual gearbox feels slick to use though, and gear changes have a precise feel which makes shifting up or down a delight when driving enthusiastically.

Jeep Compass Driving

The Jeep Compass’s suspension set up manages to bring a bit of comfort, ruggedness and impressive handling. It gets a MacPherson strut set-up at the front and an independent Chapman strut set-up at the back with Koni’s frequency sensitive dampers. This system works like adjustable dampers without all the expensive and complicated electrical systems. It uses hydraulic valves to control how much damping happens, depending on the frequency of suspension movement – high frequency (when you drive over bad roads) will reduce damping for better ride quality, while low frequency (when on smooth roads) will increase damping for better stability and handling.

Does it work? Yes! Over bad roads, the Compass while happily absorb ruts and potholes without complaint and it also feels quite rugged. However, there is a fair amount of movement at the rear seat. At the same time, when on smooth tarmac, the Jeep Compass will stay surprisingly flat through corners even when you push it hard. At the same time, steering feels direct, weighs up well at high speeds and offers good feedback too. This makes it one of the most involving cars to drive in this price bracket.

There are six airbags on the Limited variant, though lower variants could get fewer. Fog lamps get cornering function, and ABS, EBD, ESP are obviously there, along with electronic rollover mitigation. The showstopper though is Jeep’s trademark SelecTerrain system. The Compass is primarily front-wheel drive, but four-wheel drive is engaged full-time in auto mode and the system can power the rear wheels whenever it detects a slip. It also offers modes like snow, sand and mud with a mere twist of the rotary knob placed behind the gear lever. There’s hill hold too, and it worked excellently on inclines.

Come to think of it, the dynamic abilities of the Compass are what make it shine as an SUV. Be it on road or off it, the Compass gave us little to complain about with its handling. Sure, the diesel engine is a bit noisy but that’s something that hardly comes in the way of an engaging drive thanks to the well set-up suspension and responsive steering. Boot space could have been slightly better, but most buyers wouldn’t mind trading that for the excellent legroom for second-row occupants. The feature list, at least on the Limited version we drove, is up to the mark as well, which adds to the SUV’s appeal. Its pricing then is key to the success of the Compass in our country, which is a highly price sensitive market, and we expect Jeep to price it in the 18-24 lakh rupee price bracket. The Compass is certainly a bread and butter model for the Jeep brand in India, and if priced well at the time of its launch this August, will certainly help Jeep rake in volumes and even achieve the cult status it enjoys the world over as an SUV maker.

The new multi-information display on the instrument cluster and the steering wheel controls look premium. The interiors of the GT has black interiors and the regular one has black and beige interiors. Even the seats on the GT are black in colour instead of beige.

The Polo has just a cosmetic upgrade and hence there isn’t any change in its space. The front row seats are large and offer good support. The side support on the front seats is much better than most of the other hatchbacks. The rear seat space is very little. Two fully grown adults cannot sit behind one another in a Polo. The space will be a bit too tight. This is one downside of the Polo, however it fine for a family of a couple with small kids. The boot though is large enough to carry stuff for an entire weekend.

Looks can be deceptive, especially with the GT TSI. It’s powerful 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine is a little monster that can move mountains. The 103 BHP power never lets you down and the car gives you 175 Nm of torque from as low as 1200 rpm and consistently pushes you back in the seat till the rev meter hits 4000 rpm.It’s like a turbo diesel engine torque, and it catapults the car from 0-100 km/h in less than 10 seconds. Volkswagen Polo GT Driving The Volkswagen Polo GT TSI also gets ESP which prevents wheel-spin although this system isn’t really required on this car since power is fed in a smooth manner. There is also hill hold which isn’t of much use on an automatic car. The GT TSI is lighter than the GT TDI and is less stiffer too, the softness of the suspension being very noticeable when you hit a bump, the tendency to bounce a bit and leave its line is there. There is less understeer though and ride quality is excellent. The steering is quick but could do with more feedback, more so considering the GT is a performance model. Braking performance is excellent and the car stops dead in its track at any given speed (the hazards turn on when you stand on the brakes). The new Apollo Alnac tyres offer better grip and don’t lose traction as quickly as the Aceleres offered before.

Audi A4 Design

Immediately recognizable as an A4, the new sedan is slightly larger than its predecessor, a sign that Audi redesigned it using the same successful recipe we’ve come to know for decades. The shape hasn’t changed and the styling is familiar, albeit with sharper lines. This comes as no surprised given the new 2016 Audi Q7 and the 2016 Audi R8 received similar treatment. The model is more aerodynamic than its forerunner, and according to Audi, it’s also the most aerodynamic in its class, with a drag coefficient of only 0.23.

“The shape hasn’t changed and the styling is familiar, albeit with sharper lines.” While the front apron got only minor changes in the foglamp/intake area, the grille and the headlamps are as fresh as they get. Both feature sharper design cues, while the headlamps have a new pattern and extend less toward the fenders. There’s also a slightly reshaped hood. Together, these new features make the A4 look significantly more aggressive. The rear sports similar styling. The new bumper, the slightly shorter trunk lid and the slimmer, redesigned taillights give it a fresh and bold appearance. By contrast, the profile hasn’t changed much, even though Audi meddled with the side skirts and the quarter-windows.

As far as dimensions go, the new sedan is 1 inch longer and 0.55 inch wider, and its wheelbase has gained 0.6 inch. The car’s height has remained essentially unchanged. The big news regarding the A4’s revised body is that it’s 33.1 pounds lighter than its predecessor’s, contributing to an overall weight that has been decreased by up to 264 pounds, depending on trim and engine.

Alongside the sedan, Audi also unveiled the A4 Avant, which features the same styling updates and a sportier roof. The wagon is less aerodynamic than the sedan, with a drag coefficient of 0.26. Both models can be had with optional LED and matrix LED headlamps.

The interior is where the A4 received a lot more changes. The sedan’s cabin was rather dated compared to what its competitors had to offer, especially the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi made sure it got the attention it deserved. Even though the overall layout is still somewhat classic for an Audi, the dash and the center stack are cleaner to look at. The most obvious addition is the new 8.3-inch color display, now positioned atop the dashboard. The infotainment controls are closer to the center console.

The controls are now positioned lower on the handle, which should make them easier to use while driving. The aluminum inserts here improve the sedan’s premium feel. The continuous air vent strip on the dashboard makes the cabin seem wider.

The slightly bigger body dimensions and the redesigned interior features enable the new A4 to deliver enhanced roominess. In fact, Audi says it has the “…longest interior and greatest shoulder width at the front compared with competitors.”

It also has new colors and materials, standard LED lighting, lightweight seats, and a new interface for the automatic climate control. The new MMI system includes navigation, touch capability, LTE connectivity, WiFi, and free-text search function. A head-up display and the Audi virtual cockpit feature are available as options, as is the LED interior package with color-adjustable lighting. There’s also an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system and Audi tablet as mobile rear-seat entertainment.

The 2017 Audi A4 diesel comes fitted with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TDI diesel engine. The power it generates is 190bhp and it has a torque of 400Nm. This engine is mated to a seven-speed S-Tronic automatic transmission. It takes about 7.7 seconds to reach 0-100 km/h from 0. The A4 diesel is a very torquey unit. I experienced a lot of torque steer as well, when pushed hard. The NVH levels are excellent and at par with what one would expect from a car of this class. The A4 gets the Audi Drive Select which has four modes. These are Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual.

New Audi A4 Diesel EngineThe 2017 Audi A4 is also offered with a 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine. This engine churns out about 150bhp of power and is offered with a seven-speed S-Tronic transmission. The A3 is offered with a 1.8-litre despite a smaller body. But, with a reduction of weight by about 95 kilograms, this much power is sufficient. Especially for those who are chauffeur driven. Audi has played its weight reduction card very well. The smaller engine doesn’t affect the performance that much. Also, now there is the DSG on the 2017 Audi A4 instead of CVT on the previous sedan. This also makes up way for it.

Honda WR V Design & Style

Unlike some other Cross hatchbacks of its segment, the Honda WR-V gets some significant updates which has helped it get an entirely new identity. Towards the front, the WR-V features a raised bonnet while the thick chrome grille somehow reminds us of the new City. Honda WR V Cabin & Comfort

The WR-V is a bigger machine than the Jazz, but it’s still under 4 metres long. So the space would be just about enough, right? Well, no. The sense of space could obliterate claustrophobia as a concept. While you won’t have that commanding/SUV-esque driving position, you do get the sense you’re sitting in a car that’s longer than 4 metres. That segment-first sunroof just adds to the airy feel. Seating five-up is easy but the middle occupant will want for more shoulder room. Also, the lack of adjustable headrests is just ridiculous and the integrated ones are too small and soft. The seat cushioning is a tad too soft, especially for long jaunts and considering this car’s positioning as something for explorers. After all, unlike the Jazz, this does get cruise control. Heck, you even get a 363-litre boot that’ll accommodate the average adult comfortably (kidnappers/Omni owners please note).

You also get nice touches like a steering that’s adjustable for rake and reach, and a can-holder in front of the driver’s AC vent. Also, modern cars have A-pillars that’re thicker than the US president, so the WR-V’s little quarter glass comes in handy at intersections. Somehow, the quality benchmark is similar for the tech and trim – just enough. There are hard plastics all-round, but nothing you’d call cheap. There’s no leather this or soft-touch that, but the upholstery is of a decent grade. The 7-inch infotainment system has a simple UI and a decent list of connectivity options including MirrorLink and WiFi, which is great. However, the system’s inherent lagginess is annoying and ever present. Moreover, the setup looks like an aftermarket add on. Also, the lack of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay can’t be ignored when there’re cheaper cars that get both. Lastly, the air-con may have a cool touch-panel but using it on the move isn’t all that convenient. You do have to take your eyes off the road to operate it and even the cooling was weak in our 40-degrees Celsius test conditions, which also draws your attention to the missing rear AC vents.

Honda WR V engine & Transmission

As expected, the WR-V gets the same engines as the Jazz. That means a SOHC 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol that produces 90PS at 6,000rpm and 110Nm at 4,800rpm as well as a DOHC 1.5-litre I-DTEC turbo-diesel that puts out 100PS at 3,600rpm and 200Nm at 1,750rpm. The diesel gets a 6-speed manual and the petrol gets a 5-speed manual – however, there is no CVT option like in the Jazz.The diesel engine has got good low-end grunt and with a responsive throttle, it will happily trudge along at 25kmph in third gear. The engine is quite free-revving and the linear power delivery makes the car quite enjoyable, if not exciting, to drive around. The gearbox is typically Honda with a precise ‘click-click’ when you shift gears, while the light and progressive clutch is nice to use in stop-and-go traffic.

Additionally, the 6-speed makes the WR-V a comfortable and effortless highway cruiser. While Honda didn’t give us any figures, they are claiming best-in-class acceleration figures. They are also claiming that the WR-V diesel will offer segment-leading efficiency with a figure of 25.5kmpl. This is 1.8kmpl less than what they claim for the Jazz. Apart from the extra 50kg that the WR-V carries, this could also be down to the gearing which, Honda says, has been optimised for better acceleration. But we’ll have to wait for the road test to get real-world figures.What is obvious is that the engine is still as loud as it has always been. NVH levels are quite poor in the cabin and that’s personally quite off-putting.

On the contrary, the 1.2-litre petrol engine is super refined and creamy. It’s very quiet till around 4,000rpm at which point the sound turns to a nice raspy note which gets louder as you get to the redline. That said, the sound is the only exciting thing about it. The engine feels annoyingly underpowered and you really have to rev the nuts off of it for some decent acceleration and that can get quite annoying especially during overtakes. This, despite Honda saying that they reworked the gearing for better acceleration. That said, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem within the city. The precise gearbox and the light clutch only make the experience that much nicer in slow-moving traffic. Honda is claiming that the petrol WR-V will return an overall average of 17.5kmpl which is quite respectable.

Honda WR V Driving dynamics

The most significant mechanical update in the Honda WR-V is the suspension. The new set-up and the larger tyres raise the ground clearance to 188mm from the Jazz’s 165mm. Ride quality certainly feels more supple than the Jazz, and it absorbs potholes quite well without any thuds. That’s also got to do with the larger-profile tyres. Damping is neither too soft nor too firm, so the car doesn’t feel bouncy or jumpy over undulations.But around the bends, the car does tend to roll a little when you start to push it. However, at normal driving speeds, the Honda WR-V feels safe and confident. For reference, it feels around 30 per cent less stiff than Maruti’s Vitara Brezza and therefore a little less nimble too. The electric steering offers good feedback but feels quite vague. But it’s neither too light nor too heavy and weighs up well at higher speeds.

All variants of the Honda WR-V get dual front airbags and ABS with EBD as standard. It also gets a rear camera with multiple viewing angles, but like the City and Jazz, you don’t get rear parking sensors.

Honda WR V Verdict

… if you are looking at getting yourself a Jazz, the WR-V deserves a closer look. It is definitely better suited to tackle our roads, and as such is more versatile than the Jazz. Just don’t expect the WR-V to tackle any serious mud plugging. However, the WR-V does offer more in terms of appeal and equipment. We expect the WR-V to be priced Rs 70,000 – Rs 1,00,000 over the Jazz, and that would well justify the extra kit and attitude that the WR-V has to offer. However, when compared to the more square and upright compact-SUVs in the market today, the WR-V’s appeal seems to dim. And, when you factor in the expected price, Honda’s WR-V ends up feeling like a bit of a hard sell.

The Audi Q3 is an SUV offered by the German carmaker in a 2.0 litre diesel engine which is offered with a choice of a manual and an automatic transmission. You would have to be a hardcore Audi geek to spot the difference between the 2017 facelift and the 2015 version. We’ll save you the trouble — there are just two. The front bumper has been redesigned, with the faux air inlet being slightly larger than before. Secondly, there’s an added dose of cladding that gives it a typical rough-roader look.Everything else remains identical to the outgoing version. But, that’s not a bad thing. The all-LED headlamps look slick, and the daytime running lamps grab attention. The dynamic turn indicator (LEDs blink sequentially in the direction of the turn) is a cool party piece too. What we particularly like are the loud colours the Q3 is offered with. The Aqua Blue and Bright Red shades you see in the pictures look stunning and suit the youthful nature of the Q3 quite well. We recommend skipping the subtle black, white and silver and look at these instead — they transform the little SUV into a head turner.

The Q3 is unmistakably Audi in its design. Aesthetically, it might not have the flair of a GLA, but with its crisp lines and upright stance, it is definitely likeable. To put it simply, the little Audi looks more like a scaled-down SUV than a blown-up hatchback. Measuring in at 4388mm x 1831mm x 1608mm (l x w x h), the Q3 isn’t the longest or tallest in its class, neither has the largest wheelbase. The BMW X1 is a full 51mm longer (and 10mm taller), while the Mercedes-Benz GLA has a 96mm longer wheelbase. Step inside the Q3’s cabin and you won’t see a lot of gizmos and there are times when it feels very much like the Volkswagen Polo with the matte black and brushed Aluminium finish. The Q3 S falls in the similar range as the Mercedes Benz A Class and the latter feels too modern when compared to the Q3 S.It is still not a mood spoiler as it feels roomier than the A Class. The seats get basic leatherette and the cushioning is decent. Front legroom is sufficient while the rear legroom is an issue for taller passengers. All the seats are very comfortable and even on long drives do not cause any fatigue.

While Audi guys were generous to give the driver all possible electric controls for adjusting his seat, the front passenger might feel bad because in addition to the manually pushing and pulling of the seat, he also has to battle with a rotary knob to adjust the inclining angle.The speedometer is similar to the standard Q3 and so is the driver information screen mounted on the dash board. The DIS screen can also be folded and tucked in the dashboard. There is no automatic climate control in this which pinches it hard especially when you consider its price tag and the other options available in the market. The AC unit does a decent job and cools the cabin adequately.On the central console, there are twin cup holders and there is storage space under the adjustable armrest. All four doors can hold a litre class container. It has a superb boot space and one can stock more luggage than in the A Class or the BMW 1 series

The Audi Q3 is powered by a 2.0 litre diesel engine with two states of tune. In one format, it generates 174 hp of power at 4,200 rpm and 380 Nm of torque between 1,750 rpm and 2,500 rpm. This version has an automatic transmission while the other variant is mated to a manual gearbox. The manual gearbox trims produce 138 hp of power at 4,200 rpm and 320 Nm of torque. Both engine tunes have generous performance figures for most driving conditions. Transmission available for one version of the Audi Q3 is a 7 speed S tronic automatic gearbox. This transmission is available only on the 35 TDI diesel engine powered variants. This variant also has Audi’s exclusive all wheel drive Quattro system. For the most comfortable ride it’s worth sticking with SE trim, or deselecting the lowered suspension offered on more expensive S line cars (a no-cost option). In this guise the Q3 does a brilliant job of keeping large bumps and ruts under control at low speeds, and keeping the car’s body stable.That said, even if you do decide to keep the S line model’s lowered suspension and larger wheels, the Q3 does a far better job of keeping its ride controlled than other S line models in the Audi range. Even the lowered RS Q3 remains composed, even over patchy surfaces.Unfortunately, the faster you go in any trim level, the more uncomfortable the ride becomes. The car thumps into large potholes and expansion joints, jostling its occupants.

Raising the ride height of any car doesn’t do much for its handling but, among rival SUVs, the Q3 deals with it better than most. There’s plenty of grip in tight turns and body lean in corners is fairly well controlled.S line models have larger alloy wheels than entry-level SE cars, as well as lowered suspension. These contribute to even higher levels of grip and body control.However, although the steering winds on and off smoothly, and the Q3 is relatively quick to turn in, it doesn’t have a great deal of feel, meaning you can’t quite sense the front wheels biting and so plot an accurate course through bends. Even the high performance RS Q3 fails to communicate with the driver, although it does resist roll better than lowlier versions.

When compared with its small SUV rivals, the Q3 falls short of the class best but still performs well with regards to safety. In fact, examining its five-star Euro NCAP rating more closely, it’s evident that the model’s child protection rating is near the top, although its pedestrian rating is only average.The Q3 provides most of the safety kit you’d expect: six airbags, including curtain bags that extend into the rear of the cabin, electronic stability control and ISOFIX fittings for the front passenger and two outer rear seats. However, automatic emergency braking isn’t available.

Audi Q3 Bottomline

The new Audi Q3 is now a lot fresher, offers extra features and at the same time, retains the good qualities of the previous version. It would have been nice to see the updated engine with betterpower and efficiency make it to India as well. There are more colour options too, like the shade you see here. Model trims will mostly be similar to the outgoing model. We drove the Technology variant that features standard navigation and 20GB jukebox storage in addition to the other features like the panoramic sunroof and LED lighting. The entry level model wasn’t here at the drive but expect this version to get added features too. The Q3 rolls out in India on June 18 and we expect prices to go up only marginally

Tata Tigor Overview

Tata Motors gets the credit of inception of the sub-4 meter sedan segment with the introduction of Indigo around a decade back in 2007. Then, again in August 2014, in an attempt to further exploit the sub-compact sedan segment, the company launched the Zest sedan in the Indian market. But now, as the aforementioned sedan duo is ageing and doesn’t consist of contemporary features as its counterparts, Tata has come up with yet another sub 4-meter sedan in form of the all-new Tigor. Being based on the super successful Tiago hatchback, it had its first public appearance at the 2016 Auto Expo. Tata Tigor is offered in both petrol and diesel fuel trims in four grades: XE, XT, XZ and XZ (O). The all-new Tata Tigor features several styling and interior elements, along with the same set of petrol and diesel motors as the sibling hatch. Tata Tigor Look

The Tigor compact sedan underpins slightly tweaked version of the XO platform. Although the car uses the same platform, the wheelbase has been extended by 50 more mm to add the extra amount of space for the rear passengers.Coming to its exterior styling, we must inform you all that the Tigor Styleback looks far better than any other compact sedans of the Indian market. It is quite evident that the Tigor hurriedly did not finish designing the car. It does not have any disproportionate lines towards the B-Pillar onward while the boot and the rear profile blends perfectly with the overall design quite well. The sloping roofline towards the rear of the car and that integrated roof spoiler with the stop lamps adds a premium appeal to the Styleback. The rear profile also features a wraparound split LED taillamps which look gorgeous with the Hexagonal elements in it. The lower bumper at the rear profile looks bulky which has helped in making the sedan appear slightly bigger than its sibling Tiago.

Apart from the newly done rear profile, the front and side profile gets the same treatment as seen on the Tiago hatchback. Fewer changes to the front include a smoked projector headlamp which also gets integrated LED DRL’s as well. The lower bumper houses round shaped fog lamps with chrome embellishments. The Tigor also gets Tata’s signature grille with Hexagonal detailing and Tata Motors logo at the centre; this grille can also be found in the Tiago hatchback as well. The side profile too looks identical to the hatchback with no such noticeable changes. However, it does get two different alloy wheel patterns for the petrol and diesel variants respectively.Thus with all the changes mentioned above calling the Tata Tigor one of the most proportionate looking compact sedan’s currently available in the Indian market won’t be an understatement

Tata Tigor Space

Although there are plenty of changes on the exterior Tata Motors decided not to mess too much with the cabin inside for the Tigor. You can clearly notice that the steering wheel, dashboard, instrument cluster and everything else that you see shared with the Tigor hatchback. However, the changes do come in the form of a new 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system which housed in the middle of the dash.

What else is also new is the rear seat design. Tata Motors calls it a sofa because the back seat stretched to the both the edge of the door opening; the rear seat also gets a foldable rear armrest with two additional cupholders exclusive to Tigor. There are also plenty of cubby holes inside the cabin as well Tata says that there are as much as 17 cubby holes inside the cabin which is quite practical. The extended wheelbase has not only helped in extracting the maximum amount of knee room for the rear passengers but boot space as well. The Tigor gets an impressive 419 Litres of boot space at the back of this compact car which definitely will come in handy for the customers of this segment.

Overall the interior looks spacious (credit goes to the extended wheelbase), well-equipped thanks to the new touchscreen infotainment screen, automatic climate control (available on the top end variant) and JBL speakers. The seats too look comfortable because it is slightly more reclined and can comfortably accommodate 3 average side adults. Furthermore, the cabin also gets plenty of cubby holes as well which really comes in handy during long tours.

Tata Tigor Performance

Like the Tiago, the Tigor will be offered with a 1.05-litre, three-cylinder diesel engine and a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine. Both engines come mated to five-speed gearboxes, albeit with shorter gearing to compensate for the 50kg weight increment over the Tiago.The diesel engine makes 70hp of power and 140Nm of torque, figures which are quite low by segment standards. And the fact is the diesel engine feels adequate, but no more. Performance in town is fair and you’ll be able to keep up with traffic, but when you want to overtake, you’ll miss that mid-range surge we’ve just come to expect from even small turbo-diesels. There is a mild step up in power at 2,000rpm but power delivery remains flat thereafter, forcing you to downshift when you need to get a quick move on. Out on the highway too, you will often be left wanting for power. The diesel engine is also on the noisier side and sounds thrummy when extended. For their part, the gearbox is smooth in operation, though not slick, and the clutch is reasonably light too.

For most urban buyers though, the petrol Tigor would be the one of greater interest. The petrol Tigor uses the same engine as the one on the Tiago but Tata has added a balancer shaft to cut vibrations here. The inclusion of the balancer also required recalibration of the ECU and the net effect is the engine feels far nicer than it does in the Tiago. Vibrations are significantly reduced and fueling seems cleaner too; power delivery is noticeably smoother than the petrol Tiago. Performance in town is decent with reasonable responses to throttle inputs. Fairly smooth gearshifts and the light clutch also help the experience. Still, the 85hp engine does little to excite. The build-up of power is flat throughout the rev range (it revs until 6,500rpm) and it simply lacks zing. And when revved hard, the engine doesn’t sound particularly nice either.

Tata Tigor Driving

In terms of driving, the Tata Tigor ride has a very supple ride. It irons out most of the road bumps and it does a fairly good job. The handling too, is one of the best in its segment. Push it around a bend and the hatchback does a good job. The steering wheel is light and still has good enough feedback. This is what makes it stand out.The fuel tank capacity of the Tata Tigor is 35 litres, which will be sufficient for long road trips as well. The ride quality of this vehicle is good and what stands is its handling. It is a good mix of ride quality and handling characteristics. Tata Tigor Safety

Tata Motors is offering the new Tigor with dual front airbags, ABS, EBD with cornering stability control. The Tigor hasn’t been crash tested yet but the body panels and the sheet metal feels quite solid and well built, specially when you open/close the doors. Tata has a wide network across the country and with the success of the Tiago, their after sales have become much better. The Tigor is expected to offer low maintenance with reasonably priced servicing and spare parts.

After spending some time with the Tigor, we believe Tata Motors have got another winner in their hands after the Tiago, if they price it well. The Styleback design of the Tigor is unique and looks quite appealing, the interiors are loaded with features, the cabin is spacious and practical while the engines are also fuel efficient. If accepted well in the market, the Tigor can give some serious threat to the compact sedan segment.
